Nobody seems to know what will become of jkf now that she has been removed from the presidential seat. Some people say she still has tenure and will resume her former job in the ASL department. Some people believe she will resume her former Provost job (which I disagree since Faculty Senate already voted against her thus nullifying that possibility). It appears it is believed she will remain at Gallaudet one way or another.
Sigh! Why? Why would she even want to stay at Gallaudet?? Walk around in a hostile environment? Is she a sucker for punishment? There are many other universities that are probably in awe of her "New Order" idea and would be thrilled to have her aboard. Just not at Gallaudet where ASL and Deaf Epicenter is precious. Where "New Order" is met with suspicious and resistance. Take her ideas elsewhere.
I simply do not understand jkf's physiology. It's been largely agreed upon that she has a personality complex - Napoleonic, Grandeur, etc...And possibly largely based on how her mother raised her. We all understand that. But we don't understand her tenacity and insistence upon being joined at the hip with Gallaudet and ikj who continues to be her best cheerleader and most loyal fan. Seems to me she just doesn't know when it is time to move on. Now is good time for her to move on to something else. Go someplace where her leadership style and ideas would be well received and accepted.
Besides if she goes back to ASL department, MJ Bienvenu will eat her alive. For sure after their confrontation where jkf said " I am the only person who can lead Gallaudet" and MJ fired back, "You are that arrogant?" Payback time if she goes back to ASL department.

Jane OUT! But It Ain't Over...
Yes, everyone all over is celebrating our hard-won battle in forcing Jane out. Notice I used the word, "battle"? The second demand hasn't been met. The BoT expressively and specifically stated that the students did commit and violate the university's Code of Conduct thus it is at ikj's discretion to follow through - or not. As of now, it is understood that those arrested will be on PNG (persona non grata - Latin word for banned from a specific place or event) status. It is also understood FSSA's lawyers are on the ball in regards to this issue and hopefully ACLU will jump in and assist.
Now, what? What about Mike Moore, the interim Provost? Why is he on an interim status? Is IrvingBoT holding Provost job for jkf in event the presidency does not work out? Did BoT forsee the protest? Did they already know the protest was in the works? That it was unavoidable? Did they figure the protest would burn out and die sooner or later and jkf would proceed to assume the presidency - but they ought to "play it safe" and keep the provost post on an interim status? It sure looks like it to me.
Now, they terminated Jane from her president designate AND presidency posts - but nothing about afterwards. Does their definition of "termination" mean a permanent "PNG" status from Gallaudet - meaning she will never work for Gallaudet again? Or is she merely terminated from the president seat but she could resume her Provost job?? After all Mike Moore IS an interim. Again, why? If BoT sticks to the true definition of "termination", Jane will never be back. And there will not be any room for negotiation on jkf's part.
What BoT need to keep in mind if they indeed have in mind to allow jkf resume her Provost job that Faculty Senate already voted 82% against her as well as that her appointment as Provost was without approval and vote/participation from Faculty Senate 6 years ago thus nullifying her appointment. They must take this into consideration when they announced jkf's termination. jkf must never return.
So, what about the interim provost post? What will BoT do about Mike Moore? Or what will ikj do about him?
Like many other bloggers said, BoT and administration are both corrupt. They both need to be totally wiped out and replaced. When I read the BoT members on RidorLive - it boggled my mind how these people got nominated to serve on Gallaudet's board. Many of them have NO ties to Gallaudet or background in deafness or service for the deaf. BoT needs an overhaul. A reform. There needs to be a criteria for someone to be nominated to serve on the board. Not out of a jar. Not a personal friend of the university's president or anyone in the administration. Do a background check on each nominatee. Make sure they are appropriate choice to serve on board.
There will be a long road to recovery. This is not over. This is just a battle won. There is still a war raging on. Keep your war chants and energy!

Phoenix Tent City

For more viewing, go to: azfssa.com
Sorry for the delayed posting. The event took place on October 15th and the website was set up the following day. Then, my family and I went on vacation the same week. My boys had their Fall Break. I took these pictures and they are featured on azfssa's photo gallery. I also wrote the commentary for the website. The video clips were done by Dave Victorson, Missy Keast's husband. They have a business named Signs For Intelligence which makes CDs for public officers, service workers, etc, as well as for general public. Kathy Say, the tent city mayor, assisted in selecting clips.
Mesa, a phoenix suburb, and Tucson had their tent cities the following weekend while I was gone on the vacation. Many of the Tucson folks couldn't come to our tent city so they had their own.

Jane Fernandes: WHAT complex does she have??
Jane's refusal to resign reeks of several personality complexes that came to mind: Napoleonic, Messiah, Egocentric, Hitler, Jesus, Mussolini, Stalin, to name a few. Now before you attack me for naming Jesus, he was indeed a good and humble person, leading people to freedom and for religion belief, but he did manage to lead thousands, as had Moses, thus therein the complex.
I would suggest Jane to watch movies featuring any number of abovementioned people and see herself in these dark leaders apart from Jesus and Moses. They all had single similar trait - "I am the only one who can lead." Her exact words in Washington Post, not once, but several times. She also mentioned it yet again in a vlog interview with Joel Barish on DeafNation just two days ago.
These dark leaders may have managed to lead thousands by force for some years but Jane needs to keep in mind what happened to these leaders: they met with tragic ends. Napoleon, exiled to an island; Hitler committed suicide; Mussolini and Stalin assassinated; Jesus crucified and starved to death. Which would she prefer, I wonder? In modern day, I would think the exile is the most likely route.
Jane really needs to think hard about pushing herself upon people who don't want her. A leader must earn respect and support and she earned neither as evidenced by her 6-year tenure as Provost. It amazes me BoT failed to see that. What did they miss? Did they not know her performance as Provost? At Clerc Center? How did Jane manage to hide that from BoT?
She insists that BoT leads the university, not the faculty or the students. She is greatly mistaken. It is the other way around. BoTs meet only a few times a year and review procedures and policies of the university and appoint new president when needed. The university is always about the faculty and the students. They are the heart of the university. Like MJ Bienvenu said, faculty are tenured - nothing BoTs or Jane can do about them. They are there to STAY. Yes, students come and go, but they all represent Gallaudet all throughout the generations. Alumni are the watchdogs and always around. They all lead the university, not BoT. Jane needs to learn that.
Jane treats FSSA as troublemaking children in which BoT need to discipline saying, "I don't understand why it hasn't been made clear before" in reference to why BoTs haven't stepped in and done something to the protesters to indicate that they are the "boss" and in position of power in which they cannot overcome.
It truly bothers me the BoT's passivity and unwillingness to initiate any action. It IS their place to initiate action since King Jordan quite evidently lost control of his university and Jane is in limbo battling to hold on to her "entitled" position as the 9th president. I quite welcome action of Congress. Jane threatened with "investigation by the Congress" - I don't view it as a threat but as a relief. I think the act of Congress will uncover some corruption and overthrow BoT, King Jordan and Jane Fernandes. Act of Congress would restructure BoT to ensure that it is more fairly balanced and stronger criterias for which a candidate must meet to serve on board. I am appalled to learn that several board members have no knowledge or background in Deaf, and Ken Levinson is one of the most profound example. How the hell did he get appointed to serve on board?? A daughter wrote to defend her father admitting that he knew nothing about the deaf....And she had the nerve to defend her father? I replied to her that I sympathized with her for her father's unexpected entanglement with the protest, but that was what he got for serving on a board of an institution he knows nothing about.
The way it seems to go lately, I see BoT and Jane continuing to ignore the protest and awaiting Jan 2007 for Jane to be sworn in as 9th president. Unless we manage to lit fire under the congressional floor. Short of that, I don't see the protest going in our favor. Jane is like the pink Energizer bunny - keeps going and going.

1988 DPN's Letter
The DPN leaders from 1988 were mostly silent during the 2 week long protests. Bridgetta Bourne-Firl flew to DC last May. Greg Hlibok lives nearby and was seen around, but he did not publicly speak out. Jerry Covell was also mum somewhere in the Midwest as well as Tim Rarus up at CSD. These were my government classmates. In January 1988, at beginning of spring semester, our teacher, Mary Malzkuhn, who taught our Public Policy class, discussed the presidential selection process, the BoT, etc. She predicted that they would appoint yet another hearing individual with no background in deafness, but with administrative and financial background. We all discussed on how we can do to change that. January slipped in February, and the topic became more serious. It reached a near-boiling point in early March when I had to leave Gallaudet due to health issues. By then, Tim, Bridgetta, Jerry, and Greg were handpicked to lead/represent the student body. Greg and Tim just won the Student Body Government campaign as President and Vice President, Jerry for his great knowledge in Public Policy and research, and Bridgetta for her people skills, and possibly to draw the female body. I left wondering if these 4 would accomplish what they spoke of doing. Two weeks later, they announced Dr Elizabeth Zinser's appointment and things boiled over. DPN was born.
To think I missed all that! I witnessed the beginning and missed the ending. The rest is history. However, I was bewildered that the foursome were silent. Until Tim Rarus showed up last Friday, now termed as "Black Friday." I went, "Whew! Finally." These students needed inspiration and support, and these 4 were in position to give them! If they did it, so could they! I realize DPN of '88 could not compared to this new protest in its magnitude, but our original 4 leaders stood up and demanded to be HEARD! And led a campus into a protest. That is the inspiration. The current students needed them.
Tim's arrest completed a cycle. He was instrumental in getting IKJ appointed as president and also instrumental in him losing his legacy. How appropriate. IKJ got his just dessert. Tim lost nothing but IKJ lost a lot. Talk about "poetic justice." His arrest also brought forth the 3 others. They came back into the limelight. They wrote an open letter to IKJ and signed together.
I get the impression that IKJ would be a happier man if he is not reminded of these 4 leaders' roles in his becoming Gallaudet's president. They are 4 thorns in his side. IKJ insisted that the protest from 1988 was about civil rights and this protest is all about disliking Jane which does not justify the protest. He tries to justify his role and decisions in relation to current protests by making the 1988 protest a different circumstance/atmosphere and unrelated to the current protest. Good try, but no cigar. They are not so different. They are many parallels. Both protests are about students being not heard. The 1988 protest was about civil rights, indeed, but this protest is about paternalism. Both protests are about BoT who failed to hear and to acknowledge. BoT continue to display attitudes of planationism, paternalism and egocentricism. These were true in 1988 and still true now. Simply put, Both BoT and IKJ have one-track mentality and tunnel vision.
To quote Tim Rarus, "IKJ is not the same man from 20 years ago." He spoke true. He has become corrupt with power and ego. Over the past 18 years, we witnessed a man change from a "for people" person to "for me" person. He handpicked Jane Fernandes and handpicked BoT to shepherd them like a cattle dog to appoint Jane Fernandes. That much is quite clear.
The problem? We can't prove it.

Gallaudet's Historic Friday the 13th
At the last count as of 3:45 AM, 148 were arrested for their involvement as protesters at Gallaudet, including two faculty members, Drs. Donalda Ammons and Lynn Jacobwitz. Imagine arresting two middle aged women with doctorate degrees?? Both are well respected tenured faculty members. Jordan has no integrity.
Speaking of integrity...It worsened when Tim Rarus, one of the 4 DPN leaders in 1988 was arrested. He flew in yesterday morning to give an inspirational speech to the students and to give his support. He joined the protest and winded up getting arrested. Big mistake on King's part. Rarus is an iconic figure and instrumental in his getting his post as Gallaudet's 8th president. It is quite untasteful and appalling that King would allow him, of all people, get arrested. People won't forget the image of Rarus wearing his impeccable suit and trench coat in handcuffs. The younger Rarus was charismatic young man in jeans and tired looking buttoned shirts and sneakers with his infamous snicker (quite Elvis-like). Fast forward 18 1/2 years. He is now a 40 years old balding family man, but he remains the same charismatic person with that snicker donning a well put-together suit. We all recognized our Tim Rarus. Too bad King Jordan did not. We all knew Rarus would join and immerse himself in the protest...getting into the thick of it, even on his first day. Clearly King Jordan did not.
Now before you all think I've got a crush on Tim...I am happily married woman, but I DO know Tim. We went to the same school. My parents were friends with Nancy, his mom, who was my former middle school principal. My mom liked Nancy and thought of her as a friend. Tim was a typical young boy overly interested in the opposite sex. At the time, I never thought Tim would turn out the way he did, but my gosh, he did! We all are proud of him. He accomplished a lot. Made history at Gallaudet. Became an iconic figure. However, Tim, I am not too worried about....
I am mostly worried about those two middle aged women with doctorate degrees. What will become of them? Will King Jordan fire those women? Did they sacrifice too much? I wonder what we will do if King Jordan DO fire them for their involvements in the protests...and Ammons' vlog on GUAA fund/email thievery in which King Jordan's office was directly involved. And what will King Jordan and Jane cook up next?
And what bothers me the MOST is Jane. Why is she SO damned determined not to resign? Does she want a presidential portrait on Gallaudet walls?? Why is King Jordan just as determined to see her succeed him? Something stinks to high heaven. Someone on the inside must made the ultimate sacrifice to whistleblow on the pair. Financial corruption or thievery? What??
COME FORWARD, whistleblower! Only YOU will bring an end to this ugly affair.

Dr Donalda Ammons' Detective Work Discovers the Truth
Dr Donalda Ammons, my former Spanish teacher during my frosh year at Gallaudet, shared with us what she investigated and found about GUAA as in why the organization did not appear active in the BPN protest since May. GUAA is one of the largest financial contributor of Gallaudet and yet it appeared powerless. Find out why! It made me sick to my stomach, especially with the recent Open Letter from King Jordan using the email roster of the members he stole from GUAA! I don't care if the "GUAA Relations" (GUAAOR) belongs to Gallaudet, GUAA was blindsided! Betrayed by the GUAA president who played on both sides of the fence between GUAA and GUAAOR...she was on Gallaudet payroll and turned over the funds and email roster to King Jordan! GUAA lost everything!! Click and view!
