Anne Marie,

I think that have been tried before? I know my alma mater had a parent organization that hosted such events and worked corrobatively with my school. It dismantled when my classmate whose father was the organization president graduated and went to Gallaudet. There was no interest in continuing with that organization, unfortunately.

There needs to be stronger organization with political clout. Right now OSD is fighting ODE via the legistative people. This is such organization that is mostly run by the parents and OAD - Oregon Association for the Deaf.

It seems to me many state associations of the deaf are now defunct. I think it is the case in my own state because we now have a state official office that serves the Deaf thus negating the association for the deaf. Many states now have such politicially appointed state offices and officials that serve the deaf. I know Oregon has one. My state does.

Therein the conflict - politics and interests of the Deaf. Politics can be a two-edged sword. Politics does not always or necessarily serve in the best interest of the Deaf - oftentimes in the best interest of the state or tax dollars.

Methinks there needs to be a separate entity to serve the Deaf to ensure that there is no self-serving politics.

It is easy to rise the issues but even harder to act on them.

I was not thinking just deaf children, I was also thinking the advantage we might could have with deaf children's hearing parents who can help pave ways to improve the overall system. They are one of most vocal groups in our sect and often more favorably listened.

Admittedly, after reading your comment, I am now at a loss because for number one reason, I do not want to waste time trying doing something that does not work. It is so easy to drain our lives like this. Another protest? Series of protests?

Now suppose finally we just somehow do away with just being on Internet like how one deaf woman in New Zealand did. She had to pay her way through for a teaching degree from a hearing university only to watch a teaching position to be taken by a crony who barely signs at all. Being in debt with her education loan, she had to start a business to making a living and at the same time, thinking of deaf children in her country, she started hosting her teaching website for deaf children. See what I mean.

For me, the idea of how to tackle a lousy system is really so enormous that I to this moment have hard time fathoming it. But going on Internet and massing ourselves this way like this..hmm? Like I said, please lesssssss meeting times and instant actions. They are what we mostly need to start with.

Hi...good challenge you posted to Joey and me! :) This question is often posed after any thought-provoking discussion- "fine. What next? Action where?" Let's VP, if you are interested?

I deleted DE's email address at his request and put back the rest of his comment.

DE, thanks! Seeing that today is first day of a weekend, I presume that Sunday evening would be the best time?

Anne Marie,

Frustruates me so much that a hearing would grab a job that should be reserved for the deaf. See that happen all the time!

Seems to me we need something like NAD but we know NAD is not a strong political organization when it comes to education. It focuses more on consumer rights, it seems to me, such as FCC, captioning, etc. NAD could not present enough clout when OSD fired Jane Mulholland and stood silently during the FSDB controversy upon hiring ex felons to work construction on campus. I presume education is not on their agenda or their strong suit.

It seems we need to form an organization that focuses only on deaf education. Canada is now fighting government to recognize ASL as their language and Sweden already has that in place - all deaf children are referred to a federal agency where their education are tracked throughout their childhood until they reach adulthood. I'd like to see something here in the U.S. like that. A federal/state agency that tracks all deaf children - not necessarily in favor of ASL but recognizes ASL as the offical language but will work with parents to advocate them in the best interest of the children, not for themselves. An agency that does not collaborate with medical professionals or politics or self-serving organizations. Right now it seems far fetching - would they pass such legislation? We can only look at the high success rate in Sweden's deaf...but Sweden is a socialist country. Can we implore our democractic Congress to adopt their law?

Greetings,

Thanks for bringing this up. To answer your question, I do not have direct answer and that is the reason I am bringing this up. I just feel the urgency for us to look at bigger picture.

You see, if I have an answer and told you, people probably will think I am here to tell you what to do. I much rather this process to be in collectivist approach. It is clear that we are coming up with some questions and ideas already to protect ASL and it will definitely lead us to decide what to do next.

In my opinion, we need to discuss and STUDY our current system. In fact, I will be posting a vlog today to discuss about Deaf Education conferences. Be a look out for that one.

Upward we go!

Right on! That's the matter. We need to stop focusing on the problems. Like Teri's recent vlog, Think Different, we need to be more creative and find solutions that will answer your how and wh- questions.

Hi, it is not possible to explain what has been happening in the field of research and money for ASL so I made a second video clip, about 4 min in length.

I also raised a question if we can still do away with the system and money anyway? They are a total waste of time and more impossible to me when thinking about it more.

Anna Marie,

Very interesting. Didn't know univsersity professors are required to maintain research and data during their tenure. That seems like a lot of work!

Yes....as Barb DiGi said in her vlog, scientific data is lacking. What we have now are mostly narratives/ancetdotal. CAEBER is still in its infancy.

I did not quite catch about how you bypassed the system on getting grants to fund your research...something about doing research by video? Your hand movements were a little blurry. I don't want to misunderstand what you said...I understand what you did increased the number of data and subjects needed to record your data compared to the traditional means of going to the schools for the deaf.

Joey,

Looking forward to your vlog on the Deaf Education COnference! Will keep my eyes out for it!

Yes, I understand your position in not wanting to "spoonfeed" us. Like Anne Marie said, the system is enormous and not-so-easy to tackle! We need to find their Achille's Heel!

I removed 630 messages from anonymous poster of whom I. believe is stalking me. It is the same old obssesion of this individual. I will not discuss any further on that subject.

Oh how I wish I "bypass" the system with money, no. I paid all on my own for data collection..flight ticket and some meals plus kindness of my deaf friends's hospitality.

What I meant about bypassing the regulation of data collection, I was granted a permit to do "snowball rolling recruit" approach instead of having to go through school redtapes. In doing this, I was able to do video clips on Internet explaining parents what I will be doing with their child data. This is just an example how we can somehow bypass rigid regulation and system that have been failing us for years.

Barb is correct about how our data has been soft. This hinders from having more effective policies and funds we need. Government people do not want to put money in something too ancetdotal.

Cy said...

Anne Marie,

Thanks for the clarification. Red tape can be such a hindrance.

What are your thoughts on CAEBER?

Anne Marie said...

Thanks for asking me a very important question. Like Barb said, it is in infancy stage and moving upwardly with training teachers how to teach and also..model bilingualism. It has yet to report anything concrete at this point. What I get in buzz words lately, it still lacks anthing attestable.

To be truthful, whatever comes with this seeding project some people involved are excusably with...doubts for being too overwhelmed when I think things can be done more proactively with assertion, advocacy, and respect. My words of discretion should speak enough.

The school where I work is part of the CAEBER schools. The first group of teachers were trained and 3 were chosen as trainers for the second group for the new school year of 07-08. I'd like to be part of that at one point. I am new so I will wait a little.

I am not sure if anyone is responsible for keeping data...that is a critical role of this research group.

I glanced at the CAEBER data report and found several schools not reporting any data. That is unfortunate. The schools really need to be kept on track on this.

Hi Cy,

First, I wanted to email you, but I could not find your email address. So I had to leave you a message here.

I was alerted by a friend of mine about the nasty comments left on your blog. I am sorry that this post turns uglier. I wish I can help you prevent someone from leaving multiple comments. I do not know how! I am just a web designer -- having no background in computer science. Design, not Science!

Over 600 comments? It is a serious offense. That's online harassment. Why do not you report? You can have someone trace the e-crumbs left by the cyberbully to the original source -- finding the original IP address and its location. If someone use a proxy server, you can still make an inquiry by reporting abuse. Many proxy servers tend to be very cooperative.

Cy, I am asking you to do me a favor. Please remove the comments made by Digusted & Eye Roller, because Teresa M. and I are being vilified and the comments are of no value to your topic at hand and are purely out to bad mouth her and me.

Thank you, eye roller for defending me. I sure appreciate it very much, however I do not take the account of the blame being placed on Teresa M.

Thanks.

By the way, your post is excellent. I hope we all become more innovative -- coming up with new strategies. OKay, It is almost 2 AM now. I better hit the sack. Good nite.

Teri,

Both removed at your request. Thank you for responding. I agree neither comment contributed to my vlog.

I am working on the isp thing. Blogger doesn't provide service to block isp or harrassment. What one would expect from a freebie blog provider, eh? Oh well.

However, whoever the person is knows how to send multiple single messages at once - lasting about 5 minutes, totaling 630. It's not the first time...I believe yesterday was the 3rd or 4th time. This person also left similar post on ODOAC's blog yesterday just because I posted a comment there. Sigh!

But I have thick skin. I just deflect and move on. :)

Hi Anne-Marie, Joey, and DE:

Is it possible for you to consult
the WFD (World Federation of the Deaf) to have someone in Sweden to
invite you as researchers? Once
you obtain information, perhaps you would consider writing a letter to the NEA, requesting a grant. Once obtaining the funds,
you apply for a six-month or 12-month sabbatical leave so you could do research in Sweden's system for education for the deaf.

For the last 15 years, I have
admired greatly the government of
Sweden's system for the deaf as well as keeping an eye on hearing parents' progress in learning SSL
-- something that the USA lacks thereof.
