OSD/OSB: What Cultural Conflicts?

Sharing my experience as a student of a residential school of the deaf and blind. The opposition at OSD cites cultural conflicts.

Here is my response... OSD and OSB Merged Response to Cy

Hi Cy,

From my viewing on your vlog and Jeff's, I understand the reactions from OSD alumnus and the constitutes shared their feelings of the idea about the merge of OSD/OSB. I knew it will be difficult to accept the merge situation.
Most deaf residentials across the nation have blind sections except my alma mater, California School for the Deaf, Riverside have a special needs section on the campus. In the same manner, you mentioned about the way we are in the same residential behaviors, culture, and human respects.
Like Jeff said, it is a politcial clout to decide what they have their own mission to use the OSB building for some reasons without divulge everyone in the public and they have not shared their rationale to keep that building.
In Jeff's story, it reminded me of my watching TV, "Stargate SG-1" last Friday night. In this episode, the SG explorers searched into another world to find the artifacts in the art buildings while the ceremony held at. They hostaged the patrons and wished to dial for their return to their homeworld. As result, they discovered unauthentic device and had no way to get home. The guy in the ceremony believed in them as if they existed and helped them to escape into the dial. In the climax moment, the government troopers stopped them. Chief was almost ordered them to fire at them but the guy stopped him. Then the chief let them go and told the troopers to twist the story that they killed the "hostages" and saved their patrons in the building. The guy was upset for the chief's manpulative liar. That's political approach.

HEYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! good afternoon WHOA WHAT WEATHER TODAY GOSH HOT! feel like i live in OVEN! hahahahahaha anyway
glad see u on vlogs again. yes i noticed about osb/osd hmmmmmmm i understand why they don't want both together i have experince about SCSDB ( South Carolina School for the Dead and the Blind) we have problem with blind. Becaused my school cut money for OUR EDCUATION as they want focus on Blind school need more stuff as computer, tech thing and edcuation. HELLO? where is our need improve for edcuation too? it's not right focus on BLIND first. but they ALREADY have anything but they decide save some money FOR REPAIR BUILDING AND NEW BUILDING FOR PROGRAMING blah blah blah which it's not belong to SCSDB! i mean come on it's enough to add soo many building i am not sure how many building SCSDB have. sometime deaf students get upset that blind and HC must join our prom and blah blah blah we want ONLY DEAF GROUP as comfortable together fun events and active many thing but sick of blind make us HAVE TO helping a lot to do why not OUR own fun time? THAT'S MANY ANNOYING OF US about blind, HC mixed with SCSD. i told scsdb we should be ONLY DEAF IN SCHOOL because FIRST deaf school then add blind and add HC gosh! it's not for them it's for deaf only HELLO TO THEM? my state have BIG AND PLENTY OF SCHOOLS programs.
my points u are right they are not bother us but only bother our event, active, programs i don't like mixed. that's why we are frustrate i attened SCSDB for 17 years i can see how people feel. that's my opinion sharing with yall about why OSD/OSB COMPLAIN NOT WANT TO BE TOGETHER ONE SCHOOL that's reason good thing about it. i hope it's help little bit i am not sure if i have point or not i just WANT sharing my experince about my old school SCSDB i just graduated last year so. ummm..... that's all i guess lol. KEEP UP with vlogs!

Hi Cy,

I had the opportunity to view your v/blog site today.

I viewed your vlog piece regarding OSD and OSB. I'll not be discussing the issues those schools are dealing with.

However, I just would like to take this opportunity to bring up two things, if I may. :-)

1) I viewed NavyBeagle's video comment and it was nice to see when he signed the original sign for Oregon. NavyBeagle signed "O", circling it a bit, in the air. That's how Deaf Oregonians have been signing for their state for years. It saddens me to see how it has been "raped" by the sign for Washington State. (This is also true for some states with incorrect signs that are not used among the local Deafies. They are such as Colorado= COLOR + A-D-O or "C" as in mountain; Hawaii= "H" as in beautiful; or Utah = "U" as in Mormon, etc.) How about going back to our roots and showing respect for the original signs for our states??

2) Your site has a cute "stamp" saying '100% certified prelingually Deaf'. Since I teach Deaf Culture, I would like to bring this to your attention just in case you have never thought of it before. If there's 'prelingually deaf', I figure that there are prelingually hearing people, right? FYI - for the last 15 years or so, I have stopped labeling myself 'prelingually deaf' because this term used, by the medical professionals and pathological educators, really refers to our being Deaf before we learn English! That is not fair. I don't think hearing babies are born with English, am I right? ;-) What are your thoughts on that?

Yes I'm sure its politics with osd and osb. Navybeagle says oregonians wants transparency from ode but that won't happen.

Interesting about you experience as a student at scsdb...at mine, we deaf and blind never interacted. Blind go to prom with us?? No way only one blind played on basketball team- he could see and could sign. He used to date a classmate of mine. Senior trip, they went to their own while we went to universal studios. My guess is scsdb adminstrators were not sensitive to the need for the deaf and blind to be separate due to language barriers. It is unfortunate situation at scsdb.

No my white boxer is very much hearing! She doesn't have blue eyes which is typical for deaf white boxer. She is just a white boxer which is now considered as its new breed. White boxer personality differs quite bit from the brown boxers...they are much more friendly and people oriented than brown boxers which are more aggressive and dominant.

I lived in poregon for 2 years. The circle O sign is not necessarily the appropriate sign for oregon it is a matter of personal preference. I signed shoulder O and observed many locals to sign the same as I. Many others prefer the circle O. Its not much of a issue up there.

As for prelingual deaf.. It does not necessarily relate to english language - any language applies. Prelingual refers to not being exposed to spoken language before age of 3. I was born profoundly deaf and grew up in a deaf family. It seems to have becme a political issue now over this word. What exactly does it mean and it seems to mean differently individual to individual.

oh blue eyes? very interesting i learn more about it :D really white boxer more friendly? but ALL of boxer mostly is friendly cuz my MANY family which is big family have boxers ALL OF THEM ARE FRIENDLY that's why i love that dog u make me so JEALOUS! hahahahahaha i glad u read my experience different than ur yes SCSDB let blind and other HC join all prom, active, sport, nomatter what it's part of programs GOSH WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM!? that's why many deaf students quits and think SCSDB not good enough educations many of deaf people go to public school wtih defa programs THAT'S ONE BIGGEST PROBLEM i try to help school change it and make it better for DEAF ED! but they NEVER understand why many people talk so plenty of negative about SCSDB! but i just graduated. i am still not happy for SCSDB about it. as it's WASTED my time frustrate wtih HC AND BLIND for? but oh well that's life!

Cy,
I am an Oregon native and went to OSD all of my school years - K through 12. The sign for Oregon IS an issue, yes! I (and not only me, but a few of my other long-time childhood Oregon deaf friends) *hate* the sign "O" off the shoulder like "Washington." As Jeff and SDA said, *please* respect us and use the "O" in the air. To prevent from confusion between Ontario, Ohio, and Oregon, just spell the word out first then sign it from then on.
Please just accept the fact that that sign that you used is inappropriate and sign it appropriately.
I did see your vlog and winced big time when you signed that O incorrectly.
I've enjoyed watching your vlogs, especially the ones about your dorm time - so funny!

I don't think any of you really grasp it.

The fact is that there were many Schools for the Deaf and the Blind established in early years at same time on same campus.

This is not the case with OSD and OSB. They have always been on separate campuses on opposite side of the city (Blind is south and Deaf is north).

There have NEVER been a merger of the Blind and the Deaf at any time in later years. Never has.

The issue is the ODE not being honest with the merger, in fact the merger is facing stiff opposition by the members of the Legislature and the Blind as well as the Deaf and even the general public who aren't even involved with either schools for that matter.

If you take good look at other schools, you will find those that have both - they are there together at the beginning - NOT after more than 100 years.

Castillo is the one with political goals of getting elected governor at expense of everybody else, even stepping over others to get her way. Her assistant is nothing but a campaign manager. Even her fellow party members don't like her.

ODE is under fire for "losing" the application by Mulholland for Director OSD. She has certified mail card to prove it. Castillo and her assistant consider Mulholland a big threat to her political ambitions because Mulholland have tales of horror to tell, having dealt with Castillo for 4 years while as Director of OSD before her sudden termination on flimsy grounds.

By the way the current Governor is limited by law to two terms and he is in 2nd term.

OSD has something of very considerable value and Castillo want it rid, even tried to get it done away only to be told that OSD Museum is off limits to her because the law specifically protected the museum. It's largest Deaf School museum anywhere.

There's more I could tell you but you will need to read at Deaf Schools United blog to get more information.
