Discord on DeafRead

There has been a definite discord among readers, vloggers, and bloggers lately. Why?

HI Cy!! Thank you, thank you for making such an excellent solution to take back DeafRead. I am feeling the same way that I wanted to have the purpose of DR to operate as a Deaf-centric server where most of the Deaf readers are able to enjoy. We need to remind the editors that the purpose of DR is to focus on cultural related topics not medical related topics.

What 'discord'? Is a normal thing that happens in the hearie community.

right on and now look at what deafread is doing now. they added posts from google news. they must be getting desperate for hits.

Interesting! I can see why they argue and haven't solve. I can assume that's b/c speech audiologists don't want to lose their jobs, CI industries want to keep profits and so on. We argue for free. They argue for money, job, etc. We won! They're not worth to argue with.

The whole CI thing "taking over" deaf read does not prevent me from keeping up with deafread. Admittedly the CI thing is disheartening and I don't like to view it anymore. I still do keep up with deafread avoiding CI at all cost. Though it would be nice to see CI removed from the front page. Hopefully the editor will consider this, yes.

Californiadeaf,

Discord means uneasy feeling - not feeling right, tense feeling, disagreements, etc.

Cy said...

Avbria,

You said it. Keep medical related topics on another page!

I think the editors may have lost track of why they started up DeafRead in the first place.

Hi,

This note is to let you know that DeafRead Team is keeping a close eye on comments among the bloggers and vloggers regarding the future of DeafRead.

I appreciate your calm tone and your message is well thought-out.

We hope to have more dialogue on this issue with the people who will be at the conference this weekend. DeafRead is a moving target and we can change with time.

Deaf Michigander said...

You said it all... Discord is what I'm feeling right now. When I see the CI on Deafread.com, I simply avoid it.

That's what one blogger say about Deficit Thinkers.

They(Deficit Thinkers) want to demoralize and colonializes deaf people so they have no voice to spread the truth about Deaf Culture, American Sign language and etc.

You need to stand up and tell these Deficit thinkers to have their own aggregators to spread their biased ideology.

I understood now and speak up for DBC.

Jared,

Thanks for visiting and commenting!

I am unable to attend DeafRead conference due to a prior engagement but my thoughts will be with you all and I wish I could participate in the dialogue about the future of DeafRead!

Looking forward to the post-conference posts from the editors to share with us what you've come up with.

get over it... they are people, and deaf like us. talk about something else, whydontcha and amuse us with something we dont know.

Deaf centric topics would/should include all spectrums of deaf people. Did you mean, ASL centric then? Because deaf centric would include oral deaf, CI, SEE, etc since they are all "deaf". DR should be careful in their decision to exclude certain people who don't fit the "mold" of certain deaf group. If DR really changes the requirement, then they are guilty by misrepresending what they have been saying all along.

Dear Deaf Teatime, you always strive to make sense and endeavor to make sure that everyone is included and comprehends the subject at hand. I admire your perserverence.

DeafRead is guilty of poor monitoring. "Go for broke" appears to be their motto". With much squabbling as a result. They need a refree.

We all have a right to our opinion. Why can't the bloggers/commenters accept this? Closed captioned blogs, or NO closed captioned blogs? What's the problem? We still have the freedom of choice. We should be allowed to do as we see fit and what appears to each of us as as showing common sense. If people see fit to have a CI or not, what is the harm? These people are following their own desires and beliefs. They are not harming us!

I personally feel that DR should be moderated and much of the "crap" edited out. They are including too many vblogs that do not make good sense, and the repedition is quite boring and not worth our time. DR does not need to import ANY AND ALL vblogs concerning deaness. "Just the facts, Ma'am". Weed out the debris.

I admire the DR editors and staff and feel that they have begun a good thing. But take your time, DR! What's the hurry? It is QUALITY not quanity that makes or breaks a forum

Respectfully,

Lantana, Lantana's Latitude Blogspot.com

In regards to the Google posts, DR just set a code to activate the inactive blogs every 24 hours and Google is one feed. We are fixing that for now, but I am personally approving those posts because they STILL are "deaf centric" anyway.

Will be fixed. Yes, DR is reading everything like Jared says. We aren't even 2 years old!!! Things will improve slowly....we want to do the right thing by everyone if possible (not everyone will be happy).

Maybe we should change Deafread.com to CIdeafread.com.

Really liked your reasoned approach to this issue. And, very timely- I'm confident we will be discussing this issue this weekend at the DeafRead conference. Smile... thank you for articulating what some of us are feeling.

As for "Deaf-centered", I'm curious how would you briefly describe "Deaf-centered"? Me- I'm gonna start here... "Deaf-centered" means having a positive viewpoint of Deaf people, Deaf culture, ASL (for America), and Sign Language (for all over the world). These all are valued in a Deaf-centered environment.

Thanks..

Agreed!

Feeling discord seeing CI takes over DR as if I lost part of my limb slowly. Really disheartened. Your suggestion of another- third pages for miscellaneous sounds great.

Let's hope DR takes notice (I see Jared responded) and take action soon.

Thank you for bring this touchy issue up front. We need to hear...er see that.

Cy: The thing I like most about DeafRead is that there's something for everyone. If you don't want to read blogs by people with CIs, you can tell who they are because they have CI in the title or short message. Same with ASL or Deaf culture, there will be some clue what their blog is about, you can click on it or not, up to you. I still read DeafRead as often as always, but I skip over a lot because there are soooo many different, different different blogs and vlogs now! sometimes I miss one because I skim them too fast. Then after you get to know your favorites, you can click the blogger's name and read all the v/blogs he/she has posted. Since Jared mentioned that he monitors all the comments, I hope DR will continue to grow and improve, but not by reducing the number of certain blogs. That's just a polite way of saying censorship, isn't it? I've read lots of favorable comments from different people who are learning new things from each other that they never could before, if it were not for DeafRead.

Beautiful message. I have said it many times that Deafread editors do not care for the future of Deaf children. They only concern about their status…I am the editor…I have the control…I have the power. They do not care about Deaf children. I hope this weekend they will humble themselves and listen to the Deaf audience this time. Those people who are against ASL should share their thoughts on AGB site not on Deafread. No exception. We have been oppressed for many years and we need to say no more. Now with Deafread…editors should promote facts and accurate information about our language and culture so parents out there can provide the best for their deaf children. Deaf Americans, if you are going this weekend…make Deafread editors realize what they had done to millions of Deaf children.

Hi Cy,

You're one of my favorite critical thinkers in Deaf b/vlogsphere.

I agree with you that DR was born out of a necessity to keep track of happenings during Gallaudet protests. Maybe that strongly influenced their thinking behind their web design. To post happenings at Gallaudet in a chronological order. Minute by minute...second by second. It was a wonderful online experience. Truly a revolution.

Now, the Gallaudet protest is over and the web design still remains the same.

I have repeated it in the past. It will be my last.

It all boils to a few FLAWS in information architecture and user interface in DeafRead.com

DR's front page GAVE an impression that there was an invasion of medical-centric blogs because their posts were posted in a chronological order. drowning other deaf-centric posts. They are simply outnumbering the deaf-centric posts.

Suppose DR decides to revamp the front page to give specific issues or sections AN EQUAL VISUAL PLACEMENT of its own. We will not feel "invaded" or threatened because all the posts under a section or an issue will be placed evenly across.

http://www.brijit.com/ is one fine example. Scroll down, you will see many headings (about 15) so we can go to our favorite sections to read the posts.

DeafPulse.com is also a very good site with excellent visual design (Hey, Adam Betts' re-design of DeafRead is awesome!). More importantly, the design of visual elements and information blended together in grid-like system. DeafPulse.com nailed it, but it's not been updated lately. I wish Nathan would push the envelope even more.

I honestly don't think DR loses its "deaf-centric" soul. It's wonderful to see 500+ blogs on DR.

DR should see it as an opportunity to revamp their "information architecture".

Yes, "EXTRA" section is one most hated feature I noticed amongst the v/bloggers. Get RID of it. Put our interesting posts out in the front!

My proposal to DR editors is to create a "sandbox" (a separate webpage) so they can be creative with the web design and information architecture seeking our feedback/suggestions.

We could come up with an amazing user interface on DR.com.

Candy,

DeafRead editors are not interested in excluding but rather to organize posts according to interest groups which was what I supggested. Keep it deaf centric on the front page as it was intended when they started up this site...this is only deaf centric page while ci and oralism have their own sites elsewhere which was the whole point. Editors could organize so that there are topics for interest groups on one tab so we readers can choose which tab we want to read - pretty much like newspaper sections. Id I want to read about sports, I go to that section. If I want to read the comics, I go to the entertainment section. Etc.

DE,

To me, deaf centric means visual language based ideals for all ranges of hearing losses. I have one high functioning class with 9 kids...out of the 9 kids, only one is not visual based learner and most of those kids hear well and speak well, but yet they are visual learners. Only one is not. Statistically, that class represents the general deaf population, so that goes for all kinds of educational and familial backgrounds - deaf centric promotes respect for native language which is visual language for the deaf. I like to call visual language a native language because it feels natural for most of deaf people therefore I'd like for DeafdRead to pay homage to that.

Rene,

Yes...DeafRead needs to revamp the site to organize it better to increase interests and generate readerships.

Agreeable! Who wants to know about CI I never care about CI. I see the number of bloggers and vloggers lost interested in Deafread! I can see your face very expressive kind of disappointed! I do feel the same thing what you express very disappointed in that DeafRead. Good Idea to seperate the different web of their own. I always believe that DeafRead should keep the role of being Deaf Center. You chose the right word -Discord. I like that word without creating emotional that is real professional!

Hi Cy,

Before I elaborate on your blogpost, I must draw your attention to the post by a hearing person. Here it goes:

"#58
Melissa Says:
January 29th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Assimilate means that a group of people became absorbed into another culture from one that they came from. In the case of children implanted as babies, their is no assimilating. They are born into and remain in the hearing world."
http://blog.deafread.com/mishkazena/2008/01/29/whats-the-problem-with-fix/

Oh, really? Melissa wants CIers to remain in the hearing world? How hypocritic of her because she brought her CI daughter to Deaf-Read where she set up her CI website about two weeks ago. Why didn't Melissa tell her daughter to set up "CI-Read" so to separate from Deaf-Read? Do they hope to convert Deaf-centric people to CI?

When I log on, I would see a long list of CI entries on Deaf-Read. I can't believe that Deaf-Read has suddenly become the most boring DR! I've lost an interest in DR. If I want to become CI, I'd have a better sense enough to search for CI on Google, but I'm not interested in CI.

I feel exactly the same. I start to lose interest in Deafread.com. I think your idea is brilliant. Hope that'd be good solution. Glad you brought it up. I have always enjoyed watching your vlogs. :o)

HaHah!

I'm watching the editors of DeafRead very closely.

They know this.

I like your idea of 3 TABS. Lately I check posts from EXTRAS more now.

Susan said...

hi Cy,

I've always enjoyed your vlogs :)

Your solution is a good one, but to have a back page, is a bit like DeafRead Extra, it gets overlooked... perhaps the format could be discussion-style format so that all posts (including the Deafread Extra ones) could be included in the main page, but in categories?

You can see my suggestion about it to Jared in my blog on http://auslan-resources.blogspot.com/2008/01/for-jared-suggested-solution-to.html

It is wonderful to see you vlogging again after a while :)

I agree! To be better deaf person, I would like to see deaf centric topics on this site. Indeed, medical related topics need to be separated on another page.

Cy,

Thank you for bringing it up on your vlog. You said it all. I don't need to repeat it here.

I love Deafread.com. Tayler and Jared did the incredible job to pull the deaf community to one place. I love it. Now it is evolving to the new point we need to make some adjustments. Your suggestion seems to be very reasonable like adding one more tab for C.I. like "Extra" tab.

Ok, good subject here. It is the time to change DR's...

For the better sake, smile!! deafk

News for you... CI people are deaf. Many say they're deaf and struggle in the same way most do.

Plus, like snowflakes... we're all very different. There's more to each of us than not having to hear the noisy world.

Wrote a long comment... blogger messed up. Deaf is deaf. And some Ci folks don't write much about CI as they do about living the deaf life.

Be fair.
