The culturally Deaf housemate I had heard enough to be able to translate lyrics to ASL. I've seen that with few other culturally Deaf people. However, you are right. Most cannot understand the lyrics and can experience just the heavy beats.
I find it odd that these three c.i. students who can hear well enough end in a Deaf school.
Interesting, speaking even knowing they are in signing environment. so who truly started the division? Funny, we are always blamed as culprits!
Anyhow, I agree that it's not really their fault as they clearly have been influenced by hearing attitude and values.
"Division" is not always a bad thing. I view it as sub-groups. So, in ANY communities (even the hearing world), there are always sub-groups. In the Deaf community, there are simply groups that share different interests, values and attitudes. For example, people in one group resolve their lives based on eyes; others in another group resolve theirs based on ears. That is why those who rely on hearing go panic when their HA batteries ran out or their CI's fail.
Not ALL people with CI's are people of the ear, but some CI users are actually people of the eye.
It just boils down to interest/values and also attitude. I am not very interested in topics related to ear. I do not share the same values with those people of the ear. We are simply asking for a space for People of the Eye! There is NOT even ONE site that is for the People of the Eye! So, we are due to have ONE! Nothing is wrong with it.
Deaf people have always been divided, deaf.read has tried I think to address that initially by providing an aggregate where all could contribute to find perhaps a some common ground, the recent 'deafside' think is I believe, a backward step, perhaps an premature admittance these divides cannot be bridged, and an attempt to defuse some heavy discourse that has been coming in.
Any pundit on the deaf areas will have expected it, is is NO surprise, it is happening, we are talking about many many years where the divides have been entrenched, and to find common assent is going to take just as many.
'Deaf space' was always viewed as protectionism by everyone but the 'Deaf' themselves ! It provided a 'sheild' to fend off what was inevitable, which was the confrontation to justify it, in deaf terms.
Since deafside was mooted, the relief on a some blogs they might get a retreat to hide away in again. I doubt this is now remotely possible, and deafside is NOT about providing a retreat, it is an 'moderated' section to deaf.read in effect, and doesn't do anything to prevent the debates going on, since it will just pick some blogs via a panel (Thatis moderation!), that don't relate to heated debates, where I come from they call these... NOTICE BOARDS !
Unfortunately it again allows some 'Deaf' sectors to operate closed aggregates, which is hugely negative an image, it is the politics of the past, of a system that didn't work, this is the net, it is global, it is open to all, there is no way you can close it off...
enjoy listen to you. Your asl is cool. I like the way of your facial expressions. Ha! You are natural,... Wish I can click to make a video comment to tell you the story that I met a lady who closed her graphic design adv. business because she could not stand doing poster for skinhead or nazism. I know I can not compare this with deafread about welcome ci who is not in favor of use sign language or not want to understand deaf culture. I wondered how taylor or jared feel about it? (curious)
The 3 students don't have CI. Ironically, none of the 6 students I mentioned have CI. They are the smartest kids in the whole middle school and none of them have CI. And we have quite a number of students with CI.
These students are HH...their speech/language range in the banana shaped range - they are capable of hearing langage.
Even with that, they still get delayed and fall behind in public schools...performs better academically using ASL, even for those 3 kids who rather speak than sign. This tells me they are VISUAL learners even if they rather speak! Thus why I use the word, "value." They placed value on hearing and speech above ASL - who put the value? I presume that his previous teachers and families did. They picked up this value from somewhere...the two are new transfers from public schools and are first years...so I will see how they turn out in a few years. Will they drop speaking and sign more? Or will they continue to prefer to speak?
The important thing here is they are in a better school where they progress productively. These kids go home and socialaize with their neighborhood kids and get to speak with them.

Yes...its based on what one values. Culturally deaf value differently from those who are not. I see that already in my middle school kids...I won't be surprised if these things occur in elementary classrooms.
Pity on hard of hearing or deaf tone people, who chose to speak, because they can't hear voice expression. When a person said "shut up", hh or deaf tone ppl won't know what kind of attitude that person has...rude or not. Not just "shut up", but many other words, too. Like "I want your car", they understand all the words, but won't know if the speaker wants to rob or just gives compliment, etc. ASL users use facial expression.
Dividing amongst Deaf Community has been there for a long time. Nothing is changed. Deafhood is not going to change the way our Deaf community do in our daily life!!! Deafhood only helps me understanding better about myself as Being Deaf! That is all I can think of!!! I am very glad you open your eyes in your classroom!!! You learn something valuable!!! Good for you!
For two years of Gally, I never knew that the lady was hearing....she looks like deaf...100 perfect deaf! How did I catch her? It's so interesting..when she told me that she had to speak in French with her boyfriend's parents..She was from Canada..I asked her if she could speak..I never seen her speaking..She finally told me that she's HEARING. I was sooo shocked and always thought that she was DEAF. Oh my gosh, but she is really beautiful in ASL. If you met her without knowing, you would think she's deaf.
I think deaf.read is heading for meltdown, a number of blogs anti the proposed 'changes' have been relegated to deaf.read extra where they are less likely to be read, where before they weren't. We are now being censored not just pigeon-holed. Has deaf.read all been for nothing ?

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Of course there are hh people who can tell the difference and understand voice expression by voice alone. I'm one of them. And I'm not even alone in this either.
BTW, it was nice meeting you in person (another vlogger) this weekend, you both (and your husband) are great people! Im glad I got to know you little more other than blogging/vlogging.
LOL. I was red on Saturday but I am already tan now. The advantage of having Italian hertiage! There seems to be a myth that says Italians do not sunburn - they just tan! Due to being from the Mediterrean area which is close to the equator?? I rarely really get sunburned - just red then tan without peeling or pain.
It was indeed nice meeting you. The wedding was lovely. Glad we hapopened to sit next to each other and got to meet! :)
Many culturally deaf love to listen to music. I don't think that it has anything to do with Deaf Culture. Many culturally Deaf enjoys translating song lyrics into ASL versions and I do enjoy watching ASL songs based on voiced songs and see how it is translated especially if the beats are good and rhymatic. Simply put, culturally deaf prefers to use ASL syntax to interpret what the lyrics say rather than leaving it in its original version and signing it out word for word.

I'm sorry but Deafread is no longer the big one. Deafread is only 20% now.
There's other deafgator sites to use and more is on the way.

I speak and love to listen to music, and I'm very deaf cultured. I will never let anyone tell me otherwise.
