"Sweet Nothing In My Ear" has my double thumbs UPs. Well made and very wise decision not to include into the movie "the winner." The message of the story is the family needs to stay together for the sake of the child. A parent shouldn't make a decision based on their own fears. Dan Grisham was grieving for the hearing baby he once had and Laura Grisham was scared of losing Adam once he is CIed and speaks. Both had their own agendas and the movie was not about Adam at all. It was about the journeys of the parents, their inner struggles, their selfishnesses, their dreams, trying to fool themselves into thinking they wanted the best for Adam but the reality was they wanted something for themselves.
This is the journey many hearing parents experience when they have a deaf child.
I was hoping Dan and Laura might unite and ASK Adam what he wanted but it did not turn out that way - they wisely left off when Laura and Dan made their confessions and agreed what was the best for themselves was each other, and was not necessarily about Adam.
As always, Phyllis Frelich and Ed Waterstreet brought quality to the movie. I think were Phyllis younger, she would have made a better Laura, but MM did an excellent job, nonetheless. Jeff Daniels was full of surprises...he did a decent job.
Deanne Bray was a surprise cameo! Always good to see her on screen.

Hi Cy
I agree with you. I am very happy and relieved with how the movie ends. I did think it would end in favor of the hearing father, but it didn't. Whew! Also, I liked how the lawyer argued back about the reading level! The old argument about the reading level is getting very old!

I only seen first 30 minutes of the movie because I had to leave for work...still I agree Jeff Daniels did pretty good.
Last night when I was at work I was thinking about what if I bumped into the actual Jeff Daniels...say 6 months later and I use sign language with him....would he follow? probably not.
I've heard about Phyllis Frelich pretty often but never seen her act til last night. Thought she was good too.
I'll have to wait til May or June to finish the rest of this movie after the DVD is out.
Agreed!
That was a very smart movie. It was about the parents that was based on the decision for themselves, not for Adam.
Wish they could ask Adam what he really wants.
At the end of the movie, there were no-no winners.
I felt that at the end of the movie, it made me to ponder about the "we", not just for Dan nor Laura to decide. It must be the peremptory challenge.
I strongly wish that the movie was about the deaf baby that could affect us into the CI controversial debate/discussion. I wish that I could be eager to debate like this kind of situation.

I agree! It's a super movie and very honest!
You said it all!! :D

Good Morning, Cy! :)
Yes, I agree with you 100 percent. No question about that. I am really enjoying your blogs. Keep up with your good work on your blog.:)
I also liked your quote "thumbs up" in regards to the movie "Sweet Nothing In My Ear". (simple and short)
Stay sweet as you are and will be in touch soon.
Take care with more blessings this week.:)
Cheers,(with glasses clicking after copying you with thumbs up);)

If parent doesn't make the decision so does the kid that isn't old enough or wise to make the decision as well. So double thumb up! Yours are one thumb down! LOL.
I gave this telemovie "lukewarm approval".
I will discuss more what Director Jospeh Sargent and writers and performers really could do to make that telemovie much better and satisfying.

I love Phyllis Frelich-- she is one of the oldest Deaf actresses. She deserves to get an Oscar award. I had met her three times. BTW What happened to my first comment that I sent this morning?

I noticed your name on my email list earlier awaiting moderation but it apparently didnt show up on the blog's moderation folder. I dunno what happened. You could re-post if you wish. Or I can see if I can go back to my email to see if I can retrieve your message from there.
Candace,
As a teacher, I am quite familiar with the fact that most of our deaf students are reading a mere one grade level lower than the national average for hearing students. A good shot by that lawyer.
Me, too - I thought the judge, being hearing herself, would rule in favor of the father. The way the grandfather (Ed Waterstreet) presented in court in regards to deaf culture may come across as "fairy tale" to most hearing people. Deaf Pride? Culture based on language? What language? Most hearing people don't view ASL as a language but merely a communication method or mode based on English. That is only half right. Anyway, I was afraid the judge would think that and think the whole bunch from Laura's side was insane. But we will never find out...Laura and Dan decided to work it out without court intervention...

I checked my email and the earlier one was for my other post before this one..."MM Has It Right." I believe this one was posted in that one.

I second you on Phyllis Frelich - she indeed surpasses MM...no question about it. I met Phyllis once when she was visiting her siblings at Gallaudet while doing some business. Really nice lady. Her youngest sister, Pam Frelich, was in my class. Funny how all girls in her family are named with first letter P. I think theres only one boy - Daryl, next to the youngest before Pam.
I would believe Phyllis never needs coaching - she is a natural and gifted actor. MM has to work at it.
Hi Cy,
I must agree with you about Phyllis Frelich. If she played in a film, "Children of a Lesser God," she would have won an oscar since I had seen her in Broadway. She surpassed Marlee. She is a really and truly talented actress. (Had you seen Phyllis in Gallaudet's production, "Medusa"? I had. If one asked me what is la différence between Phyllis and Marlee, I would simply and honestly reply that Phyllis has never needed a coach! To date, Marlee still needs to be coached for acting -- or dancing, for that matter.
